Fighting Near Baidoa Raises Fresh Concerns in Southwest Somalia

October 26, 2026 | The Wider Chronicle

Fighting was reported on the outskirts of Baidoa on Monday between Somali National Army troops and fighters loyal to former Southwest State president Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen.

Somali Guardian placed the confrontation in the Burjed area, on a route toward Burhakabo. An official aligned with Laftagareen described an ambush on army units. That account represents one side of the confrontation and has not been independently verified by The Wider Chronicle.

What remains unclear

FTL Somalia also reported fighting near Baidoa, identifying the location as Burijeed. It said a detailed statement from either side was not yet available. Reliable casualty figures and the outcome of the confrontation remain unconfirmed.

Early reports should therefore be treated cautiously. Claims about battlefield gains, aircraft involvement or the number of people killed require further confirmation.

Why it matters

The immediate questions are whether the fighting continues, whether civilians can travel safely and whether the opposing forces provide verifiable accounts. A single battlefield claim cannot establish lasting control of an area.
