Our commitment
Somali Beacon aims to provide accurate, fair, and useful coverage of Somali American and international news, culture, history, and community life. These standards guide our reporting, commentary, and visual storytelling.
How we verify stories
Before publication, our standard is to check names, dates, locations, quotations, and central claims against reliable evidence. We prioritize original documents, official records, direct statements, and firsthand reporting, and seek independent corroboration where possible. An official statement is attributed as a statement, not treated automatically as established fact.
We identify sources so readers can assess the evidence. Serious allegations require particular care, clear attribution, and an effort to obtain a response from the person or organization concerned. When information is disputed or cannot be independently confirmed, we say so. We do not invent quotations, sources, or reporting, and we distinguish confirmed facts from estimates and developing reports.
News, analysis, and opinion
News reports verified facts and attributed statements. Analysis explains events and their context, with conclusions grounded in evidence. Opinion presents a writer’s perspective and should be clearly labeled. A contributor’s views do not necessarily represent Somali Beacon. Factual claims in opinion pieces are held to the same accuracy standard as news.
Fairness and independence
We aim to represent people and communities fairly, avoid stereotypes, and protect private information that has no clear public-interest purpose. Relevant conflicts of interest should be disclosed. Advertising and sponsored material should be clearly identified and kept distinguishable from independent editorial coverage.
Images and AI-assisted work
Photographs should carry accurate context. Illustrations, reconstructions, and materially AI-generated or altered images should be identified where readers might otherwise mistake them for documentary evidence. AI tools may assist with drafting, translation, or production, but their output is not a source of proof. Editorial responsibility and verification remain with Somali Beacon.
Corrections and updates
We review reported errors and correct confirmed inaccuracies promptly. A substantive correction should include a dated note explaining what changed. Routine spelling or formatting fixes may be made without a correction note. Updates that add new information should be distinguished from corrections to earlier reporting. If a story’s central premise is no longer supported, we will clearly explain any withdrawal or substantial revision.
Report an error
Use our Contact page and begin your message with Correction request – Somali Beacon.
Please include the article link or title, the specific statement you believe is incorrect, and supporting evidence or a reliable source. Share only information needed to review the issue. We assess requests on the evidence; disagreement with an opinion alone does not establish a factual error.
